Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
1. Peel and slice the uncooked yams in about ¼ inch round slices and arrange in a buttered baking dish.
2. Combine the other ingredients into a syrup and pour over the yams.
3. Cover and bake until tender, about 30 - 40 minutes, spoon basting about every 10 minutes. Uncover and bake another ten minutes, letting the tops brown.
